After a long hiatus, Once Upon a Time brings us a true fairy tale-inspired episode to keep the momentum of season 7 going. We enjoyed diving into this reimagined version of “Rapunzel” and appreciated that the show explored Lady Tremaine’s past in a more dynamic way. We also theorize on what might happen next week, which is the final episode before the show goes on its winter break. Could the curse be broken? If so, by whom? And who cast that curse anyways, and why? There are lots of ideas that we toss around and discuss!
We have double the Once Upon a Time episodes to discuss this week! First up, an eerie take on the Rapunzel fairy tale and the story behind (new) Hook and his mysterious daughter. Next up, we get a brief glimpse of Wonderland and learn more about one of our favorite new characters in season 7, Alice. There is a lot to discuss about new mysteries that are cropping up in Hyperion Heights, and we theorize about certain characters’ motives and what might be up next in the unfolding saga.
Time’s up: Regina is back and once again finds herself in a tragic new situation. She may finally be un-cursed, but no one else, least of which Henry, can be let in on the truth, otherwise there will be tragic consequences. (What, we don’t know. But we’re guessing, based on Regina’s expression, that it wouldn’t be good news). Plus, what part will Rumple play? This episode also allowed us to travel back to the Enchanted Forest and learn that Regina was a mentor to Ivy, which sparked a series of events that (presumably) led to the present-day cursed Hyperion Heights. Season 7 is finally shaping up with some extra intrigue and mystery, thanks to this strong OUAT television episode.
This week on Once Upon a Time, we got to romp through The Princess and the Frog, otherwise known to this show as Tiana’s realm! We finally got a little more information on our favorite new character of season 7, Tiana, and enjoyed the return to a more classic Once Upon a Time tone with the flashback. We were also pleasantly surprised by that plot twist at the end, and we can’t help but theorize more about what is up with Victoria Belfry and her daughter, Ivy. Plus, Henry and Regina… what do you think is next for those two, and what are we looking forward to finding out most?
This week’s episode of Once Upon a Time set aside the new characters of season 7 in favor of a return to a some of its more traditional fan favorites. In it, we bid a heart-wrenching, but satisfying, farewell to a favorite character. “Beauty” capped off an epic love that started way back in season 1 between Belle and Rumplestiltskin in “Skin Deep,” with parallels to that episode along with other nods to a few Disney favorites. This episode also kicked off a new – and quite possibly final – quest for Rumplestiltskin to one day find his way back to Belle.
Would Once Upon a Time season 7 be a bit easier to get into if we were binging the entire season at once? Is the OUAT season 7 reboot working for you, or are you having a difficult time getting into it, too? This week, we discuss our personal reasons for not being able to dive into the story like usual. With that said, we also explore some of the aspects of this season that are holding our interest and making us excited to learn more about. Plus, we can’t help but wonder if maybe a lot of the new characters are “decoys” and some of the grown-up children of our former faves will be back very soon.
Yo ho, yo ho… it’s a Once Upon a Time life for us. Or more specifically, a complicated Once Upon a Time life for us because once again this show threw a major plot twist in our way. Did any of you see it coming? Hyperion Heights Hook isn’t our Hook, and the “real” Hook and Emma back home in Storybrooke are (spoiler alert!) expecting a baby pirate! The show gave a fitting final goodbye to Emma Swan in this episode, providing us all a generally satisfyingly happy ending for Captain Swan. Meanwhile, new!Hook, Regina and Henry seem to be teaming up against something that feels off in Hyperion Heights, and we can’t help but wonder what is going on with Gold, aka. Weaver, and whether he’s awake in this curse or not.
Welcome back! Another Once Upon a Time season, another Once Upon a Time curse. In the series’ 7th season, we are introduced to a brand new fairytale world-within-the-real-world, Hyperion Heights, which marks a dramatic departure from Storybrooke and the OUAT we once knew. Join us as we talk about our impressions of an adult Henry, a new Cinderella, a punk-rock Alice and several familiar characters who have carried over from past seasons, all bringing intrigue and mystery along with them. Let us know what you thought about this brand-new take on our beloved show!
Hey there, Oncers! We’re back for a special summer podcast episode discussing the latest Once Upon a Time news following San Diego Comic Con. We have lots of Once Upon a Time goodness to cover: a new trailer, a sneak peek that revealed the first few minutes of the first episode of the next television season, and lots of casting (and guest star) updates. Sit down and catch up with us… we’ll even have a bit of theorizing about what could happen next season on OUAT!
To wrap up Once Upon a Time’s 6th season, and the final season for many of our beloved characters, we really dig deep into not just this past television season, but the entire series as a whole. We spend much of our time talking about our thoughts on Emma Swan and her character arc. Although we will always love OUAT – and are generally satisfied with how season 6 wrapped (just listen to the previous podcast episode for that!) – Amanda breaks out Joseph Campbell’s Heroes Journey to evaluate Emma’s overall story arc and where the show lost its way in the overall development of her character. To lighten the mood, we also address some of your comments and thoughts about the past season, and Brittany gives us hope about the news that Once Upon a Time is moving to Friday nights this fall (hint: it’s not as bad as you might think). We hope you all have an awesome summer hiatus (or winter for those in the Southern hemisphere!) and we will be back later in the summer once there is more news about season 7. Be sure to subscribe to Once Upon a Podcast on iTunes or your favorite podcast app so you can catch our next episode when it’s released!
Once Upon a Time’s Final Battle ended up being more like a series finale than just a season finale. And no wonder, because these were the episodes in which we had to say a bittersweet farewell to some of the central cast members who have been the foundation of the show for the past six seasons: we bid adieu to the Charmings, who maintained to the very end that hope is the most powerful magic of all (and the episode was replete with tributes to their best moments on the series). We also wrapped up Rumplestiltskin and Belle’s tumultuous last three seasons, finally giving them a new beginning. We were glad Henry got to act his age and finally go to school. And what we were mostly holding our breaths for – Emma’s ultimate fate – played out in this episode, with Emma’s story culminating in a Final Battle and a storyline that required her (and us) to remember who she truly is and how far she’s actually come since Once Upon a Time’s pilot episode. Oh, and then that set-up for Season 7… we are in for a drastic reboot!
What did you think about the Final Battle – was it a satisfying episode? Are you going to be watching season 7?
Be sure to subscribe to our podcast because we will be back in a few weeks, in early June, to talk about the larger picture of what has been wrapped up this season and how we feel about the overall stories of some of our beloved characters that won’t be back in the show’s future seasons.
It’s time for a Once Upon a Time singalong! For the first – and maybe only – time ever on the podcast, we play music critic and chat about each and every one of those sweet, funny, and even quite surprising musical numbers that the OUAT cast performed on this week’s penultimate episode of season 6. We also discuss how the unusual format added to the excitement of Emma Swan and Captain Hook’s wedding. Plus, we talk about some very significant casting news and theorize about how this season (or even the series) will wrap up next weekend on the Once Upon a Time season 6 finale.
As the infamous final battle looms over Storybrooke, we learn how the Black Fairy’s evil indeed wasn’t born, but was made… a callback to the show’s themes back in the first season. Is this the final season for Once Upon a Time, and if so, is the story that is currently unfolding, which reaches all the way back into the show’s earliest days, wrapping up in a way that we are satisfied with? On the podcast this week, we also discuss the implications of what the Black Fairy’s presence in Storybrooke means for Rumplestiltskin’s choices now, and whether we believe he’s teamed up with his dark mum, or if his heart is still in the right place. We’re getting super excited as this season begins to wrap up in unexpected ways (and we’re more than ready for next week’s musical episode!)
We finally get to see more of Zelena this week on Once Upon a Time, learn about a different side to her past, and finally determine that she’s been redeemed. Meanwhile, despite all of the darkness lingering around Storybrooke, love is in the air and Snow White is more than enthusiastic to plan a dream wedding for her daughter. Yet, the Final Battle is still looming… and we can’t help but wonder if it’s getting almost too hyped up?
In yet another wonderful Once Upon a Time episode that brought us back into the original mythology of the show and sets us up for that impending Final Battle, we revisit Cursed Storybrooke and learn that Snow and Charming had briefly reunited during the curse – but set the needs off their beloved townspeople over the needs of their family. And we watch as Hook struggles (with Tiger Lily) through Neverland, Zelena and Regina attempt to revive Snow and Charming from the sleeping curse, and we see Rumplestiltskin start to waver and question his identity when face to face with his mother. The television season is rapidly reaching its apex, and we are enjoying the ride so far.
