To wrap up Once Upon a Time’s 6th season, and the final season for many of our beloved characters, we really dig deep into not just this past television season, but the entire series as a whole. We spend much of our time talking about our thoughts on Emma Swan and her character arc. Although we will always love OUAT – and are generally satisfied with how season 6 wrapped (just listen to the previous podcast episode for that!) – Amanda breaks out Joseph Campbell’s Heroes Journey to evaluate Emma’s overall story arc and where the show lost its way in the overall development of her character. To lighten the mood, we also address some of your comments and thoughts about the past season, and Brittany gives us hope about the news that Once Upon a Time is moving to Friday nights this fall (hint: it’s not as bad as you might think). We hope you all have an awesome summer hiatus (or winter for those in the Southern hemisphere!) and we will be back later in the summer once there is more news about season 7. Be sure to subscribe to Once Upon a Podcast on iTunes or your favorite podcast app so you can catch our next episode when it’s released!
Once Upon a Time’s Final Battle ended up being more like a series finale than just a season finale. And no wonder, because these were the episodes in which we had to say a bittersweet farewell to some of the central cast members who have been the foundation of the show for the past six seasons: we bid adieu to the Charmings, who maintained to the very end that hope is the most powerful magic of all (and the episode was replete with tributes to their best moments on the series). We also wrapped up Rumplestiltskin and Belle’s tumultuous last three seasons, finally giving them a new beginning. We were glad Henry got to act his age and finally go to school. And what we were mostly holding our breaths for – Emma’s ultimate fate – played out in this episode, with Emma’s story culminating in a Final Battle and a storyline that required her (and us) to remember who she truly is and how far she’s actually come since Once Upon a Time’s pilot episode. Oh, and then that set-up for Season 7… we are in for a drastic reboot!
What did you think about the Final Battle – was it a satisfying episode? Are you going to be watching season 7?
Be sure to subscribe to our podcast because we will be back in a few weeks, in early June, to talk about the larger picture of what has been wrapped up this season and how we feel about the overall stories of some of our beloved characters that won’t be back in the show’s future seasons.
It’s time for a Once Upon a Time singalong! For the first – and maybe only – time ever on the podcast, we play music critic and chat about each and every one of those sweet, funny, and even quite surprising musical numbers that the OUAT cast performed on this week’s penultimate episode of season 6. We also discuss how the unusual format added to the excitement of Emma Swan and Captain Hook’s wedding. Plus, we talk about some very significant casting news and theorize about how this season (or even the series) will wrap up next weekend on the Once Upon a Time season 6 finale.
As the infamous final battle looms over Storybrooke, we learn how the Black Fairy’s evil indeed wasn’t born, but was made… a callback to the show’s themes back in the first season. Is this the final season for Once Upon a Time, and if so, is the story that is currently unfolding, which reaches all the way back into the show’s earliest days, wrapping up in a way that we are satisfied with? On the podcast this week, we also discuss the implications of what the Black Fairy’s presence in Storybrooke means for Rumplestiltskin’s choices now, and whether we believe he’s teamed up with his dark mum, or if his heart is still in the right place. We’re getting super excited as this season begins to wrap up in unexpected ways (and we’re more than ready for next week’s musical episode!)
We finally get to see more of Zelena this week on Once Upon a Time, learn about a different side to her past, and finally determine that she’s been redeemed. Meanwhile, despite all of the darkness lingering around Storybrooke, love is in the air and Snow White is more than enthusiastic to plan a dream wedding for her daughter. Yet, the Final Battle is still looming… and we can’t help but wonder if it’s getting almost too hyped up?
In yet another wonderful Once Upon a Time episode that brought us back into the original mythology of the show and sets us up for that impending Final Battle, we revisit Cursed Storybrooke and learn that Snow and Charming had briefly reunited during the curse – but set the needs off their beloved townspeople over the needs of their family. And we watch as Hook struggles (with Tiger Lily) through Neverland, Zelena and Regina attempt to revive Snow and Charming from the sleeping curse, and we see Rumplestiltskin start to waver and question his identity when face to face with his mother. The television season is rapidly reaching its apex, and we are enjoying the ride so far.
We dive back into the core mythology of Once Upon a Time: dark magic, Henry’s twisted family tree, Hook on an adventure that is going wrong at every turn, authors, saviors and the revelation that we’re on the last chapter of that Once Upon a Time book that started it all. We have so much fun theorizing and talking about what could be coming up in the next month, and wondering how all of those loose ends will be tied up. Could the entire series be wrapping up… or are we in for a dark curse to end all dark curses?
Welcome back to another episode of fairy tale shenanigans. This week Once Upon a Time takes a magical carpet ride to places under the sea, deserted islands and Agrabah! Hook needs to get “crackin'” on getting back to Emma and clear up a really terrible misunderstanding. Jafar tries to explain his motivations regarding Agrabah, but do they really come across well? And does it even matter, because it looks like we’re done with the “Wondrous World,” after all. We also can’t forget to talk about ladies’ night at Aesop’s Tables (courtesy of Regina’s thrifty coupon cutting). Let’s chat!
Regina and the Evil Queen have a (literal) heart to heart on this week’s Once Upon a Time. This episode, named after the infamous page that was supposed to have foretold Regina’s romantic destiny with Robin Hood, wrapped up two plots in one: what was to be done about the Evil Queen roaming around town, and what would happen to the wish world Robin Hood who wasn’t a fan of remaining in Storybrooke? Plus, Dead Men Tell No Tales: Emma and Hook finally had that little chat about a skeleton in Hook’s closet, and while things are looking shaky for the couple, at least fans can hope for a more romantic proposal than the one we got last week.
This Once Upon a Time episode didn’t bode too well in our minds, although it does prompt a lot of theorizing and questions on our part: what is the Black Fairy’s deal? Are Rumple and Belle on the road to recovery? How cheated should Captain Swan fans feel after that less-than-romantic proposal? And do Regina and this Robin have any future together, or is the Evil Queen going to run off to find her happily ever after with Robin? Join us and let’s try to figure out the OUAT writers’ plan together!
Whoa, who saw that coming?! This week, Once Upon a Time finally revisited a part of Prince Charming’s backstory, the story of his father, which ended with an unexpected twist. Let’s talk about how Josh Dallas rocked this week’s episode and had a (well-deserved) breakdown. Hook was there to valiantly save the day and their bromance was strong until… well, it wasn’t. This week also prompted even more theorizing about the romance (or lack thereof) between Regina and Robin Hood. This show is setting up plenty of mysteries, and for better or for worse, we’re here to try to decode all of them. Plus, we talk about some news that might give hints about what OUAT has up its sleeves beyond this season.
Welcome to our first regular episode back from the (seemingly) lengthy Once Upon a Time hiatus! This week follows Emma and Regina’s adventures in the Wish Realm and Regina’s side quest to properly reunite with Robin Hood. Meanwhile, back in Storybrooke, apparently there’s a war coming, what with Gideon being hell bent on killing the Savior. OUAT is definitely setting us up for something big, and Amanda and Brittany are here to talk about it all, including paunchy Captain Hook and what technically counts as a True Love’s Kiss. Welcome back, Oncers!
Surprise! Welcome to a new episode of Once Upon a Podcast. We’re gearing up for the next half of Once Upon a Time season 6, which starts this Sunday night, March 5. Let’s talk about all of the new details we’ve heard since the show went on hiatus last December. We’re ESPECIALLY excited about that OUAT musical episode that is coming up this spring, along with new characters, returning guest stars, and new challenges for our beloved group of fairytale characters.
In Once Upon a Time’s midseason-six finale, we once again dove into a magical alternate universe along with Emma and Regina, who were wished into a land where the dark curse – and Emma being the savior – never happened. While this scenario led to one of our favorite Rumplestiltskin scenes, we hope Regina’s wake of destruction won’t come back to haunt her. Oh, and a certain someone who we thought was long gone made an appearance… so let’s speculate about what that could imply for next season. Meanwhile, Belle and Rumple were driven together by the knowledge that their son had disappeared from the Blue Fairy’s care, and before we knew it, a mysterious hooded figure emerged to deliver the second major twist in this episode. We thought that this episode and season had some ups and downs, so join us and see if you agree in our overall impressions!
Babies, fairies, and an Evil Queen who is definitely not making any of this easier: Once Upon a Time has once again complicated life for the people of Storybrooke. This week, the series focused on Belle and Rumple – and how their version of Beauty and the Beast might not have the happy ending of its fairy tale counterpart. Meanwhile, Emma and Hook are trying to figure out the mystery of the sword from her vision and Aladdin and Jasmine are still pondering how they could find, not to mention save, Agrabah. We’re going to talk about the odds that these characters will be able to work their way through their problems, as well as chat about what might be coming up in next week’s mid-season finale (and beyond). Who’s up for a wild theory or two?
